Meeting your instructor

Before you drive a single metre, we take the time to get to know each other. At Rijschool Denhaag we believe that a good connection between student and instructor is the foundation of a successful driving journey. During the introduction we discuss your background, any previous driving experience and your expectations. Have you ridden a moped or scooter before? Have you already started working on your theory exam? Or are you truly starting from scratch? All of that matters for how we structure the lesson. Your instructor introduces himself, talks about his experience in Den Haag and the surrounding area, and explains what an average lesson looks like. We drive frequently in neighbourhoods such as Loosduinen, Laak and Ypenburg, but also in Rijswijk and Delft if that suits your situation. You are welcome to ask any question, no matter how simple it may seem. Many students want to know, for example, how long it takes before they can sit the exam, whether they will learn on an automatic or manual car, and what happens if a lesson does not work out one time. We discuss all of this in a relaxed atmosphere so you know exactly what you are getting into. The introduction is also the moment when we assess how we can guide you best. Some students learn fastest by practising a lot on quiet streets, while others want to hit the motorway as soon as possible. We adapt to your pace and learning style. Your first time behind the wheel

After the introduction it is time for the real deal: driving. For many students this is an exciting moment, and that is completely normal. Your instructor guides you step by step. We always start at a quiet location in Den Haag, for example a wide street in a residential area or an industrial estate with little traffic. First you learn the basic controls: how to adjust the seat and mirrors, where the pedals are, how the gear stick works in a manual car, and how to start the engine. With an automatic car a few of those steps fall away, so you get on the road sooner. Your instructor lets you pull away, brake and steer at your own pace. It is not about perfection yet, but about getting a feel for it. How does the car respond when you accelerate? How hard do you need to brake to stop smoothly? How far do you need to turn the wheel in a bend? Those first experiences are incredibly valuable because they form the foundation of everything that follows. During the trial lesson you typically drive actively for ten to fifteen minutes, depending on how quickly you master the basic controls. Some students even drive a short loop around the neighbourhood. Others need a bit more time with pulling away and stopping, and that is perfectly fine. There is no right or wrong pace. Your instructor observes how you react, how quickly you process information and how you handle tension behind the wheel. Those observations form the basis for the advice you receive after the trial lesson. The goal is not to judge you, but to discover together how you can learn to drive most quickly and most enjoyably in the traffic around Den Haag, Zoetermeer and Rijswijk.

Our lesson car: comfortable and modern

At Rijschool Denhaag you drive in a modern, well-maintained lesson car that is specially equipped for driving lessons. The car has dual controls, which means your instructor can intervene at any moment with their own brake and clutch pedals. That provides an enormous sense of safety, both for you and for other road users. The car features power steering, air conditioning and clear, properly adjusted mirrors. Everything is designed to let you learn as comfortably as possible. A pleasant car really makes a difference. When you sit comfortably, have good visibility and the controls feel smooth, you can fully concentrate on the traffic instead of on the mechanics of the car itself. Our lesson car is compact enough to manoeuvre easily through the narrow streets of central Den Haag, yet solid enough to make you feel safe on the motorway towards Delft or Zoetermeer. The car is regularly inspected and serviced, so you never face unexpected surprises. Technical problems during a lesson are virtually ruled out with us. We also keep the car clean and tidy, because you should feel at ease in the space where you learn. Many students wonder whether they will learn in an automatic or a manual car. At Rijschool Denhaag you can discuss this during the trial lesson. We explain the pros and cons of both options so you can make a well-considered choice. An automatic is easier to learn on and often saves a number of lessons, while a manual car gives you more flexibility with your licence. Whichever car you choose, you will always drive a vehicle that is modern, safe and pleasant to handle.

After the trial lesson: your personal advice

At the end of the trial lesson your instructor takes plenty of time to go through everything with you. This is not a sales pitch, but honest and personal advice based on what he observed during the lesson. We discuss your strong points and the areas you still need to work on. Based on that we estimate how many lessons you will approximately need to be exam-ready. That estimate is always an indication, not a guarantee, because everyone learns at a different pace. But it does give you a realistic picture of what lies ahead, in terms of both time and cost. Next we discuss which lesson package suits you best. Rijschool Denhaag offers various packages, from individual lessons to complete programmes including the practical exam at the CBR. A package is often more affordable than individual lessons, but we always recommend the package that honestly matches your expected number of lessons. We never push a larger package than necessary. We also schedule your first real driving lessons straight away, if you decide to continue. Lesson hours can be booked flexibly, including in the evenings and on Saturdays, so it fits around school or work. Many of our students come from Den Haag, but we also pick you up in Rijswijk, Voorburg, Leidschendam and Zoetermeer.
